Questions and Answers

When are the application deadlines?

There is no application deadline, rather our program has a rolling admission policy and reviews applications on a year-round basis. However, applicants for fall admission are advised to have their applications complete by March 1 and by October 1 for spring admission.

What standardized tests are required?

All applicants are required to take the GRE exam (General Test only). In addition, international students are required to take the TOEFL exam.

What are the minimum GRE scores?

The Food Science and Technology Graduate Committee reviews the entire application package and does not have minimums, per se. However, to be competitive for admission and assistantships, applicants should have a Verbal GRE score of 143 and a combined Verbal + Quantitative GRE score of 302.

What is the minimum TOEFL score?

577 paper; 90 IBT; 6.5 IELT.

What is the minimum GPA?

To be competitive for admission and assistantships, applicants should have a GPA of at least 3.0

Can students apply for a Ph.D. straight from a B.S. degree or is an M.S. required?

Although students having a B.S. can apply directly for the Ph.D. program, only exceptional applicants will be considered. It is expected that the applicant have outstanding grades and GRE scores, prior research experience, and superior letters of reference.

I have completed the application process - what happens next? How long should I expect to wait before hearing back from the Department?
Once all of the application materials have been received, the Food Science and Technology Graduate Committee will review the application and determine if the student is acceptable. Students not satisfying these acceptance criteria will be informed within 6 weeks.

Applications that do meet acceptance criteria are then made available for review by the faculty. However, to be admitted into the program, a student must have a faculty member willing to serve as an adviser and that faculty member must also have funding and space in his or her laboratory. Students need to be patient as this process depends on the availability of funding. Although the program receives applications from many excellent, well-qualified students, we only admit about 10 - 15 students per year. Only applicants that have an offer letter from the Graduate Chair will be admitted.
