Upcoming Safety Seminars

EHS Presents on Lab Safety
Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), in partnership with the Office of Research, is sponsoring a campus-wide Laboratory Safety Colloquium Series for Principal Investigators (PI), research staff, and graduate students to assist them as they conduct their expert research by providing voluntary training in the latest laboratory safety procedures.     There will be five sessions of the next colloquium, Steam Sterilization Using Autoclaves.  The presenter is Gary Butler, Steris Corporation.  The following sessions will be held: 

Tuesday, September 22, 2009 
East Campus Union (check kiosk for room) from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.

Wednesday, September 23, 2009 
Beadle Center, Room N172 from 9:30 – 10:30 p.m. 
East Campus Union (check kiosk for room) from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Awards available from the American Chemical Society

The Agricultural and Food Chemistry Division (AGFD) of the American Chemical Society (ACS) offers the following awards:  The Teranishi Graduate Fellowship- $2,500 cash award and plaque. The award is sponsored by the AGFD of ACS.   The Withycombe-Charalambous Graduate Student Symposium - Two prizes will be awarded. First prize will receive a cash award of $750 and a plaque. Second place will receive a cash award of $250 and a plaque. Travel expenses will be paid up to $1000.  The Young Scientist Award - The winner receives a $1000 honorarium, an engraved plaque and paid expenses (up to $1500) to the ACS meeting to present a paper and to receive the award. The award is sponsored by the AGFD.  In addition to the above awards, the Division offers another award for scientific contributions in the area of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, the Award for Advancement of Application of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (AGFD Award). This prestigious Award, which consists of $3,000, a plaque, and meeting travel expenses, is co-sponsored by the AGFD and International Flavors and Fragrances.

IANR Dinsdale Family Faculty Awards

Nominations Sought

This year IANR has the opportunity to present two Dinsdale Family Faculty Awards to meritorious faculty members who have not yet been awarded tenure or who are not in a tenure track position. This will be a $1,750 award  that will be given to outstanding IANR faculty members for their unique contributions in teaching, research, or extension education.

Nominations will be evaluated based on the creativity and excellence of the nominee’s work in fulfilling his/her position description. Nominations should include: (1) A nomination letter (1-2 pages) summarizing what the nominee has done, why his/her activities set him/her apart from his/her peers; (2) a copy of the nominee's previous year's eARFA; and (3) a copy of the nominee’s position description. Nominations can be made by any faculty but should be submitted through the nominee’s unit administrator. Nominations should include the signatures of the nominator and the unit administrator. Unit administrators are strongly encouraged to nominate deserving faculty from their units.The nomination process is simple and straightforward. The deadline for receiving nominations is MONDAY, October 12, 2009.

Dr. Daniel Peterson Receive Grant

Generous Grant Provided by the National Institutes of Health
Dr. Daniel Peterson has received $126,630 from the National Institutes of Health for a project titled “Adaptive Immune Response to Symbiotic Bacteria as a Mediator of Gut Homeostasis.”  Congratulations!
