December 3rd Biotechnology Lecture

Biotechnology Development and Use of Life Cycle Assessment in the Biofuel Industry
On December 3, Karen Oxenbøll will present “Biotechnology Development and Use of Life Cycle Assessment in the Biofuel Industry—As Viewed From an Enzyme Supplier”.
Karen Oxenbøll is Director and responsible for the environmental assessment of the project portfolio of Novozymes (www.novozymes.com), including new developments within bio-ethanol technology.
Karen Oxenbøll is Danish and received her M.A. at the University of Copenhagen within the field of mycological ecology. She joined Novozymes immediately after the completion of her M.A and has been in the company for more than 30 years. She has held a range of positions, mainly with the Novo R&D organization, where she has been Director for Microbiological Research as well as Director for Applied Research within the fields of animal feed, pulp and paper, and textiles. For 2 years, she worked with general management as a facilitator, and spent 3 years as the Executive Assistant of Novozymes CEO.
The current effort on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of the environmental benefits of enzyme technology was initiated four years ago. Karen Oxenbøll has been instrumental in establishing a small group of LCA experts, which today consists of four LCA scientists. Combining high level LCA expertise (externally acquired) with the specific knowledge of processes and products at Novozymes has produced a good recipe for driving understanding and documentation of the environmental benefits of enzyme technology.
This lecture will be presented from 1-2 PM on December 3 in room N172 of the Beadle Center.

National Research Council Research Associateship Programs

Applications Sought for Postdoctoral and Senior Research Associateship Awards
The National Research Council of the National Academies announces the 2009 Postdoctoral and Senior Research Associateship Programs to be conducted on behalf of over 100 research laboratories throughout the United States.  The programs provide opportunities for Ph.D., Sc.D. or M.D. scientists and engineers of unusual promise and ability to perform research on problems largely of their own choosing, yet compatible with the research interests of the sponsoring laboratory.
Full-time Associateships will be awarded on a competitive basis in 2009.  Many of the laboratories are open to both U.S. citizens and foreign nationals, and to both recent doctoral recipients and senior investigators.
Postdoctoral awards are made for one or two years, renewable for a maximum of three years; senior applicants who have held the doctorate at least five years may receive awards for shorter periods.  Annual stipends for recent Ph.D. recipients for the 2009 program year range from $42,000 to $72,000 depending upon the sponsoring laboratory, and are appropriately higher for senior award recipients.
Financial support is provided for allowable relocation expenses and for limited professional travel during the duration of the award.  The host laboratory provides facilities, support services, necessary equipment, and travel necessary for the conduct of the approved research program.
Application deadlines are February 1, May 1, August 1 and November 1 for reviews in mid-March, mid-June, mid September and mid-January respectively.  Initial awards will be announced immediately following each review with notification of alternate candidates at a later time.  Detailed program information, including how to apply, is available at:  www.national-academies.org/rap
