Milton E. Mohr 2008-09 Awards

Two Food Science Students Receive Scholarships
The 2008/09 Milton E. Mohr Scholarship Awards were recently announced by the UNL Center for Biotechnology. Food Science students Olivia Kunzman and Amanda Walls have won scholarships based on their academic achievements and great potential in their field. Congratulations!

New Course Being Offered

Gastrointestinal Microbiology
This course offers an introduction to the complex microbial ecology of the gastrointestinal tract of humans and non-ruminant animals. It explores how the gut microbiota impact host and non-ruminant animals. It explores how the gut microbiota impact host health and performance. Special emphasis will be given to aspects of gut microbiota research with medical and agricultural applications.
2 credits: Lectures Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11:00 – 11:50, 302 Filley Hall
Course prerequisites: BIOS 312
Call number for registration is 9540
This course is designed for student of Food Science, Animal Science, Nutrition, and Biological sciences, but might also be of interest for students in medicine.

Erika and The FPC mentioned in local newspaper

Hispanos Unidos, a Nebraska Spanish-language newspaper, recently dedicated an article to The Food Processing Center. The article profiled the work of Erika Martinez-Picazo and her work with The Food Processing Center's Recipe to Reality Seminars. The article also advertised the seminar which will be presented on the 31st of May.

2008-2009 IFT Scholarships

The results are in for the 2008-2009 IFT Scholarship Award Competition. Scholarships were won by Susan Hammons, Jamie Eggerss, Lauren Gemar, Bailey Harris, Olivia Kunzman, Robert Lacy, Tessa Porter, Jeffrey Schroeder, and Ang Tze. IFT alternates included Laura Hargarten, Steven Kaiser, Daniela Bautista, Amanda Walls, and Melanie Downs.

Food Science Seminar for Monday, April 21

Audrey Wesseling and Anuja Patnaik to present

On Monday, April 21, we will have two speakers for our Food Science Seminar. Graduate student Audrey Wesseling will be presenting "Development of Predictive Models for the Growth of Enterobacter sakazakii in Reconstituted Infant Formula." Also, graduate student Anuja Patnaik will be presenting "Development of Glycoarray Substrates for investigation of Bacteria-host Interaction." Please join them on Monday, April 21 at 4 PM in FIC 42.

A new member of the Subbiah Family

Roja Subbiah born April 21

Today Dr. Jeyam Subbiah announced that Roja Subbiah was born at 10:19 AM, Monday, April 21 through a Cesarian delivery.  Both mother and baby are doing well and are recovering at 305, Bryan LGH East.

FST Students move on to Nationals

Will compete at FST Meeting in New Orleans
Our students are the North Central Area IFT Quiz Bowl Champions. Team members include: Tim Anderson, Melanie Downs, Suzy Hammons, Bailey Harris, and Ryan Talley. They will be going to the Nationals in New Orleans this summer. The College Bowl Preliminary Round at IFT in New Orleans is on Monday, June 30 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with the final competition that same day from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Please give them your attendance and support at IFT!

Dr. Rupnow elected IFT Fellow

Dr. John Rupnow has been elected as a Fellow of IFT. He will be recognized at the awards ceremony at the annual IFT meeting. This is a great recognition to his dedication to IFT and great visibility for our Department.

Food Science Seminar for Monday, April 14

Sudheendra Kadkol and VNN Jonnalagadda to present

The Food Science seminar next week will feature two speakers. Sudheendra Kadkol of Food Science will be presenting "Pulsed Electric Field Processing for Inactivating Microorganisms in Liquid Foods" and V.N.N. Dheeraj Jonnalagadda of Biosystems Engineering will be presenting "Determination of Yolk Contamination in Egg White by Raman Spectroscopy". You can join them on April 14 at 4 PM in FIC Room 42. All are welcome to attend.

Summer 2008 Institute for International Teaching Assistants

Important, all foreign TAs must attend

The Summer 2008 Institute for International Teaching Assistants is scheduled for July 28 through August 12, with final panels scheduled for August 13 and 14.

Prospective graduate teaching assistants who do not speak English as a native language and who are not graduates of a U.S. college or university* must

successfully complete the Institute and demonstrate before a panel of faculty and undergraduate students their ability to comprehend and convey the information necessary to be an effective teacher (unless granted a waiver from the Institute) before

Application to the ITA Institute

Applications to the Institute can be completed and submitted online by a department representative. Applications will not be accepted if submitted by a student. Departments should email Dr. Laurie Bellows (lbellows1@unl.edu) for a password and instructions for completing the online application.

Application deadline is Monday, July 7 2008.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Institute, applicants must:

  • have international graduate student status;
  • be admitted to a UNL graduate program;
  • have a score of 26 on the speaking section of the iBT TOEFL or score a 45 or higher on the SPEAK Test or the Test of Spoken English (TSE); and
  • be recommended by their department chair/head, graduate chair, or TA supervisor.
  • Oral English Assessment

    To be eligible for the Institute, students must score a 26 or higher on the speaking section of the iBT TOEFL or

    The SPEAK Test

    achieve a minimum score of 45 on the TSE or SPEAK Test.

    International graduate students with a score of 26 or higher on the speaking section of the iBT TOEFL are not required to take the SPEAK Test and are eligible to enroll in the Institute for International Teaching Assistants.

    International graduate students with a score of 25 or lower on the speaking section of the iBT TOEFL must take the SPEAK Test and receive a score of 45 or higher to be eligible to enroll in the Institute for International Teaching Assistants.

    The SPEAK test, the institutional form of the Test of Spoken English (TSE), is a taped and timed test developed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Registration fee is $40.00. Sample test materials are available at:

    Note: International students applying from abroad to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and who wish to receive a teaching assistantship, may want to take the TSE in their home country. Contact ETS/TOEFL Testing Service for more information.

    Thursday, April 10, 3:30 or 5:15 p.m.

    Thursday, June 5, 3:30 p.m.

    Thursday, July 10, 3:30 p.m.

    To register for the SPEAK Test, students should go to Nebraska Hall, room E513

    Waivers from the Institute

    *Prospective graduate teaching assistants who do not speak English as a native language but hold a degree from a U.S. college or university are eligible for a waiver from the Institute for International Teaching Assistants. Students can be considered for teaching assignments if their iBT TOEFL speaking score is a 26 or above and they either (a) graduated from a U.S. college or university; (b) have successful teaching experience in a U.S. college or university (documented by former advisor, TA supervisor or department chair/head); OR (c) is, or will be, enrolled in a college teaching-related, department sponsored course that is equivalent to the ITA Institute. Note: Students who have received a waiver must still complete a final panel and be certified as ready to teach.

    Pan-American Nutrition, Food Science and Technology Award 2008

    The next Food Science and Technology Seminar will be presented by Dr. Jay Thelen of the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Missouri – Columbia. Dr. Thelen will be presenting “Quantitative Proteomics of Seed Filling in Soybean – Current and Future Approaches”. This seminar will be presented on Monday, April 7 at 4 PM in FIC Room 42. All are welcome to attend.
