Dr. Daniel Peterson, MD, Ph.D. to Speak

The Gut Function Seminar Series / Dept. of Food Science and Technology

Dr. Daniel Peterson, MD PhD from the Center for Genome Sciences, Department of Pathology and Immunology at Washington University School of Medicine (St. Louis, Missouri) will be presenting a seminar titled IgA Response to Symbiotic Bacteria as a Mediator of Gut Homeostatsis on Monday December 3rd at 4 PM in Room 42 of the Food Industry Complex.

Monday Seminar Features Two Presentations

Walter Tembo and Saurabh Kumar to Speak
On Monday November 26th at 4 PM in Room 42 of the Food Industry Building, Mr. Walter Tembo, will present his Masters literature review seminar titled: Mechanically Separated Poultry. Following his seminar, Mr. Saurabh Kumar will present his Master's research in a seminar titled: Synergistic Effect of Pulsed Electric Field and Ultraviolet light for the Inactivation of E. coli. in Apple Juice.

The seminars will be preceded by a reception at 3:30 PM in the student lounge area of Filley Hall.

Food Science Club Meeting

The November general Food Science Club Meeting will be held on Thursday, November 15 with refreshments at 5:00 p.m. and the meeting beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Food Industry Complex Auditorium, room 42/45.

International Potluck Dinner

On Wednesday, November 14th the Food Science Club will be hosting an International Potluck Dinner.  We will be meeting at 5:00 in the commons area of Filley Hall and everyone is encouraged to bring a dish to share and drinks will be provided by the club.  We would like the potluck to have an international theme, so be creative!  The sensory lab will be available to store items or do some preparations before the dinner.  Everyone involved in Food Science is invited to attend and guests/family are welcome as well.  If you have any questions, please contact Rachel Reuss or Kenzi Clark at unlfoodscience@yahoo.com.

Pet Food Technology Symposium

Student Perspective

Heartwin A. Pushpadaas is a Ph.D. student in Biological Systems Engineering. Last week he came to The Pet Food Technology Symposium, and here's what he has to say about it:

"The Pet Food Technology Symposium topics were wide-ranging, addressing the interests of the heterogeneous audience. I always enjoy lectures from industry experts, and this symposium was no exception. I was particularly impressed by the approaches taken on the project “Mycotoxins in Pet Foods and the Impact of Extrusion Processing”. This work is of industrial importance and could benefit the pet owners. I presume all the participants will be very satisfied with the quality of the workshop. The workshop would not have been this successful without the diligent planning and enthusiasm of the organizing committee. Congratulations to them."

Students are welcome to Pet Food Technology Symposium!

As a student, you have the opportunity to attend - FOR FREE - a day of Pet Food Technology presentations from industry experts and UNL professors. The Symposium will focus on Pet Food safety and new trends in technology.

Monday November 12th Food Science and Technology Seminar

Presentation on Grain Quality Scheduled
On Monday November 12th at 4 PM in Room 42 of the Food Industry Building, Dr. Stephen C. Mason, Professor of Agronomy at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, will present a seminar titled: Production Practices & Environment Alter Maize & Sorghum Grain Quality.   Dr. Mason will highlight how agricultural practices impact raw commodity characteristics - and thus result in the variability we see as Food Scientists in the ingredients used to make food products.

The seminar will be preceded by a reception at 3:30 PM in the student lounge area of Filley Hall.
